Kasai, the displaced
Kasai
massacres
by Kamwina Nsapu
Background to the conflict
Kamwina Nsapu opposed the authority of the Congolese government and the exploitation of the region's natural resources. After his death in August 2016 during a military operation, clashes erupted between Congolese security forces of the regime of " Joseph Kabila " , former President of Congo, and Kamwina Nsapu's supporters, called "Bundu Dia Kongo". These clashes were marked by extreme violence.
Massacres and consequences
The massacres affected not only Kamwina Nsapu supporters but also innocent civilians. Villages were attacked, and thousands of people were killed or injured. The conflict also resulted in human rights violations, including extrajudicial executions, sexual violence, and mass displacement.
Displaced by war
The violence has displaced millions of people within the country and in neighboring Angola. It is estimated that more than 2.5 million people have fled their homes to escape the fighting. These displaced people often live in precarious conditions, lacking access to food, clean water, and medical care. Children, in particular, are vulnerable to malnutrition and a lack of education.
